Myron Shapiro
Myron Shapiro’s wrestling career began in 1969 as a sophomore at Rogers High School. Myron weighed only 87lbs. and competed in the 103lb. weight class. Myron achieved a record of 10-10 in his sophomore year and as a junior, he became City Champion and Most Outstanding Wrestler of the City Tournament with an outstanding 29-2 record. Myron only lost to the State Champion and the State Runner-up. In addition, Myron placed third in the State Tournament capping off a very successful junior year.
Myron was a two-time City Champion, a two-time Sectional Champion, a two-time District Champion and a State Champion in 1971 with a record of 31-0.
From 1970 to 1975, Myron placed second in the National Junior World Olympics and was Champion of the Junior World District Tryout. He was a seven-time Champion of Ohio State AAU Tournaments, three-time National YMCA Freestyle Champion and two-time National YMCA Greco-Roman Champion.
In 1975, Myron won the Great Plains National AAU Freestyle Tournament to qualify for the United States Team.
At the University of Toledo, Myron became one of their most dominant wrestlers. In 1975, he was the MAC Champion and Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. He became an All-American by placing third in the NCAA Tournament.
After college, Myron continued wrestling and represented the United States in 1975 as a member of the USA World Touring Team and also a member of the World Cup Team.
Myron was inducted into the Toledo City Athletic League Hall of Fame in 1995 and into the University of Toledo Varsity “T” Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000.
Today, not only is Myron a very successful businessman with his two brothers and partners, he is currently the head wrestling coach at St. John’s Jesuit High School, Toledo, Ohio.
