ROCKETS RETIRE STEVE MIX JERSEY

Steve Mix, Robert S. Rogers High School Graduate and member of the first class of the Robert S. Rogers Athletic Hall of Fame, had his jersey and number retired by the University of Toledo.  His Number 50 jersey was the first number retired by the basketball program and was hoisted to the rafters of Savage Hall on February 17th, 2007.

Mix, a former 76ers forward and NBA All-Star, played 13 seasons in the NBA and ABA from 1969 to 1983. He logged time in 787 games where he scored 8,355 points for an average of 10.6 points per game. In his nine seasons with Philadelphia (1973 to 1982), Mix played on three teams that advanced to the NBA Finals (1977, 1980 and 1982). He held the 76ers single season steals record (212) from 1973-74 to 2002-03 when Allen Iverson broke his record with 225. He finished fourth all-time in career steals (851). He also went to the NBA Finals with the LA Lakers in 1983 where he finished his playing career.

Mix joined the Sixers’ broadcast team in 1987-88 analyzing road games on WPHL TV-17. However, he can lay claim to starting his broadcasting career in 1975 when, after breaking his ankle in the second half of the season, he joined the legendary Bill Campbell for the radio broadcasts, finishing out the season behind the microphone. After his playing career was completed, Mix began doing analysis for the University of Toledo basketball team on WSPD TV-13 and then for the Detroit Pistons on WKBD TV-50.

Throughout the off-season, Mix hosts the Steve Mix Basketball Academy in Maumee, Ohio. The Academy introduces young athletes to work ethic, understanding basic concepts, and the level of execution required to succeed at the next level. The goal has been to convert young athletes into players. Recently, Mix was honored by his hometown state as he was elected into Ohio’s Basketball Hall of Fame for his career accomplishments in the game.

A native of Toledo, Ohio, Mix graduated from Robert S. Rogers High School in 1965 before going on to play four seasons for the University of Toledo. Mix and his wife of 36 years, Maryalice, have four children: Darrick (34), Stephanie (28), Courtney (24), and Andrew (22).
